Cool Aquarium Decor For Under $10

Almost anyone can keep a fish tank. What could be so difficult about filling a tank with water and dropping some fish inside? Well, there is actually more to it than that. You will have to replicate the environment from where the fish came from as best as you can. This would mean proper water filtration, the right temperature for your fish as well as the perfect water chemical balance.

But this alone would not ensure that your fish will be healthy and happy. Another important thing which a lot of new as well as experienced hobbyists fail to consider is tank decoration. If you think about it, the fish would probably never know that the lump of resin you dumped in with it is meant to represent a mermaid but aquarium decor do benefit the fish in a number of other ways. The decor create a boundary of sorts within the confines of the tank and this becomes especially important to the territorial fish. Also, the holes and gaps in the tank decor act as little caves for the fish to hide away in when they feel a need.

However, tank ornaments, especially the really cool intricate ones, can be expensive. All is not lost. There are still loads of other tank ornaments that we can get which will not burn a hole in your pocket. In this lens, we’ll look at some of the ornaments that are really cool which you can get for under $10.

Artificial Corals

Artificial corals are a good place to look for inexpensive yet beautiful tank decor. It is fairly easy to find corals and artificial anemone online and in the pet stores. The cool thing about it is that you do not have to worry about what items to match with what. This is because even in nature, there really is no proper matching. You will see corals and anemone of all shapes and colors side by side. You don’t even have to worry about positioning or proper arrangements. Just place them however you like.

A cool thing to do is to have a background of an underwater scene or a coral reef scene. By placing your artificial corals in front of it, it does create a 3D like effect in the tank, making it look like a vast ocean.

Plain Rocks And Aquatic Plants

This is another relatively cheap but excellent alternative when decorating your aquarium. And it really does not take much effort or creativity. All you need to do is arrange some rocks into a formation and place aquatic plants around it. A good idea is to arrange the rocks such that it provides the fish with at least a small cave. As for the plants, try arranging them in a cascading effect, with the tall ones at the back and the shorter ones in the front. And avoid blocking the rocks too much cos they are part of your decor.

For the background, you could use the same ones that I recommended for the Artificial Corals decor just now.

Do It Yourself Decor

One last suggestion is to just find stuff from around your house that you could use as tank ornaments. This can be almost anything such as unwanted china, old pottery and trinkets. But not everything can be put in the tank with fish. Avoid anything metal. They will oxidize and pollute the water. Also don’t have anything that is hand painted without a coat of varnish. The paint will leak into the water and poison it.

Don’t Have The Time For a Dog, Think Again

Everytime I take my dog for a walk down by the breakwater in Victoria BC, people always come up and start petting him. Murphy is a golden retriever who is now 10 years old. He’s getting up their in age but he’s still happy be around people.

I’ve heard a few times before that many people want to get a dog like Murphy but they don’t have the time to take care of one. I also hear from these people that they work during the week and wouldn’t want to leave the dog at home.

These are all fair comments. One’s my family and I would make all the time when debating on getting a dog. My wife and I both work and have been for 20 years for the local government. We thought there was no way we could own a dog based on our work schedule. After all who was going the raise him or her when we were at work?

Then one day when we were out for a walk we say an adorable dog and started talking to the owner. We said we had wanted to own a dog for a long time but didn’t have the time to raise or train it. The owner said they had the same issue but found out about a doggy day care in Victoria called The Wonderdogs.

The owner and head trainer was Ben Kersen who is world known and actually trains others to be dog trainers. This dog owner said they worked during the weeks but were able to drop their dog off at The Wonderdogs and take care of their dog and train them.

That was the best conversation we could have had as it pushed our family over the edge and we decided to get a dog. Once we did we took it to The Wonderdogs dog boarding and have enjoyed having Murphy so very much.

So now when we see those people and they tell us they can’t own a dog because they work during the day, we tell them about The Wonderdogs.

Why Do Guinea Pigs Make Adorable Pets?

Cavies or guinea pigs are your dainty rodent breeds. They have colourful patches, a cherubic face and guiltless eyes. Vegetarians by nature, they follow a strict diet. Their eating habits are so disciplined that you don’t have to worry they’ll nibble on something unhealthy or damaging to their health. These little angels are very particular about what they eat, and yes, they are sometimes fussy about food. They need variety. Your little piggies will get bored if you give them the same food over and over again. You have to design the platter for your darlings. They can be served with green veggies, tomatoes, carrots, fresh grass, etc in a single meal. Some vegetables high in phosphorous and oxalic acid such as potatoes, onions are poisonous to them.

They are usually confused with hamsters or rabbits, but they are rodents with the diet similar to rabbits. Rabbits and guinea pigs can dwell together as long as you, as a pet owner, can keep their aggression in check. They are usually very quiet and week(that’s the sound they make)only when you open your fridge for their favourite food items. They eat fruits, have a sweet-tooth and crave for fruits like kiwis, mangos, watermelons, etc. Though they are strict vegetarians, they are not fit to eat all vegetables. They need to produce vitamin C, so giving them vitamin C rich food is advisable.

Pellets are good, but as a guinea pig owner I can tell, unlimited quantity of fresh green grass, some cucumbers, tomatoes, coriander in their daily diet keeps them healthy. They are tender and fragile and fall sick very easily. Hence, clean food and clean cage is what keeps them healthy. They eat all day, they are foodies of sorts. The best thing about them is, they sniff food to check if it’s good for them and won’t even go near it if it’s not good for their health.

They make such adorable pets because they take care of themselves, are not noisy, don’t need a special diet. You just need to clean their cage daily and give them fresh veggies, and they give your loads of cuddle and love in return. They love walking and running around and are curious enough to explore areas. However, they will only explore places known to them. They will not even enter the other room until they are familiar. With a little patience and constant contact you can gain their trust, as they don’t trust so easily. So prattling and talking to them will ease their nervousness, and they come to you for some petting time. Guinea pigs are, I say, angel pets. They are pure at heart and innocent. Everybody should have one at least for some time!

Guinea Pigs are your sweet companions. They are make very good pets as they are easy to care for. They have a very particular vegetable diet and are calm and cuddly. They have high emotional quotient. They are curious, though timid and fragile. Just clean food and attention keeps them healthy and long lived. Their life span is only 5 to 10 years on an average.
